It comes from "Norseman" (i.e. Vikings), which basically means "north man". Same root word as Normandy - it was conquered and settled by Vikings...

ReplyDeleteI thought the north door was bricked up straight after the church was consecrated to symbolise that the devil had been driven out and couldn't get back in....you'd think he'd just go round to the other door wouldn't you....but thats symbolism for you.
